LONG BEACH -- Despite a strong offensive showing, the Long Beach State women's basketball team was unable to overcome a tough UC Irvine squad as the Beach dropped a 100-81 decision to the Anteaters on Saturday night.

The Beach (2-20, 0-8 Big West) saw four players reach double-figures and were led by Emma Merriweather and Cecily Wilson's double-doubles, however, the Anteaters (15-8, 7-2 Big West) matched LBSU and also boasted four double-figure scorers in the game, led by Morgan Green's 28-point performance.

Merriweather led the Beach with 21 points and 11 rebounds as she notched her third double-double of the season and her third 20-point showing. Wilson followed suit pouring in 19 points and 10 rebounds for her double-double of her career. Meanwhile, freshman Naomi Hunt recorded 17 points for her fifth double-figure showing of the year, while freshman Shanaijah Davison added 11 points to register her 11th double-figure performance of the season.

Davision also led the team with six assists, while Wilson grabbed four steals, and Merriweather put up two blocks. The Beach also received a solid effort off the bench from senior Darshana Ta'afua who scored five points and grabbed six rebounds in just eight minutes of action.

Long Beach State shot 44.0 percent from the field connecting on 33-of-75 in the team's highest scoring game of the year. The Beach also racked up 49 rebounds and 21 assists, both of which are team-highs for the season. While the Beach's offense surged, the defense struggled to contain UC Irvine.

The Anteaters finished the game with a 47.2 percent shooting percentage (34-for-72) and reached 100 points marking the first time in four years Long Beach State has allowed triple digits.

The Beach started off slow as they were only able to muster 13 points in the first quarter, while the `Eaters tallied 31. Despite the 18-point deficit, Long Beach State showed its grit as the Beach came back and outscored the Anteaters 17-13 in the second quarter to cut UC Irvine's lead to 14 (44-30) at halftime.

Long Beach State had a solid offensive second half as it scored 51 points, marking its highest second half scoring output of the season. However, while the Beach's offense kicked into high-gear, so did the Anteaters' as UCI poured in 56 second-half points to hand Long Beach State its 13th-straight loss.

The Beach look to turn things around next week when they travel to CSUN on Thursday, Feb. 8 for a 7 p.m. contest.
