Junior Lauren Spargo tied for the team lead with 10 points in a narrow 63-60 loss at UC Davis.

LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's basketball team put up a good fight, erasing an 11-point halftime deficit, but UC Davis was able to hit a late 3-pointer to escape with a 63-60 win Saturday afternoon at The Pavilion.
The game came down to the final possession as junior Alex Sanchez tied it up at 60-60 with 33.1 seconds remaining. Kelsey Harris then hit a 3-pointer for the Aggies, putting the home team up, 63-60, with 14.3 ticks on the clock. After an LBSU timeout, junior Lauren Spargo got a good look from the top of the key, but her 3-point attempt went off the front of the rim. The 49ers were able to corral the offensive board, quickly kicking it out to freshman Raven Benton, whose shot from the corner just missed at the buzzer.
Benton and Spargo led Long Beach State with 10 points each. Junior Ella Clark also had eight points and a team-best seven rebounds, while Sanchez finished with nine points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Freshman Anna Kim chipped in nine points.
LBSU (9-7, 1-1 Big West) struggled from the field, shooting 35.6 percent, while UCD made 44.2 percent of its attempts. The 49ers were also 3-of-12 from behind the arc.
UC Davis (6-9, 1-1 Big West) took an early 5-2 lead, but Long Beach State came back to knot it up with a Clark jumper and a free throw by Madison Montgomery. The Aggies then ended a short scoring drought and the two teams traded points over the next three minutes with four more tie scores before the 49ers used a 10-4 spurt to pull ahead 21-17 at the 8:50 mark.
UCD quickly evened the score with a four-point play by Idit Oryon. That started a 17-2 run for the home team as they went up, 34-23, with 3:22 remaining. LBSU answered with four-straight points from the charity stripe to close the gap to seven (34-27), but the Aggies went on to outscore the 49ers, 5-1, down the stretch to take a 39-28 advantage into the locker room.
Long Beach State scored the first nine points of the second half and continued on a 16-4 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Spargo, to put LBSU on top, 44-43, with 11:40 to go. It was the 49ers' first lead since the 8:21 mark of the first period.
Two lead changes and two tie scores followed before UC Davis pulled ahead, 53-48, with 5:34 remaining. LBSU quickly made it a one-point game at 53-52, but the Aggies were able to stay out front until Sanchez's layup knotted it up at 60-60.
Sydnee Fipps paced UC Davis with a game-high 18 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Harris, who hit the eventual game-winning 3-pointer, added 11 points, while Alyson Doherty had 12 points and eight boards.
Long Beach State returns to the friendly confines of the Walter Pyramid next week when it takes on UC Santa Barbara (Jan. 16) and Cal Poly (Jan. 18).
