While with the Aztecs, Anderson was heavily involved in the recruiting process and served as the team's point person for compliance, admissions and academics as well as working with the team's backcourt. Prior to SDSU, Anderson was the head coach at the University of New Haven in 2001-02. The Chargers went 11-15 in her one season in Connecticut. Anderson also served as an assistant coach with the University of San Diego during the 2000-01 season, assisting with conditioning, scouting and guard development. Anderson began her coaching career teaching physical education and history at Francis Parker Middle School, landing the girl's varsity coaching job at Francis Parker High School in 1993. Over the next six years FPHS had three CIF Semifinal appearances, a quarterfinal berth and a No. 3 state ranking.
Anderson played at UCLA from 1989-93 and still ranks in the UCLA top-five in both steals and assists. As a senior she was a candidate for the Naismith Award, and played under then assistant coach Mary Hegarty. Anderson went on to earn a bronze medal with the U.S. at the Jones Cup in Taiwan in 1991, and she also played on the Los Angeles Sparks developmental squad in 1997. On February 21, 1998, Anderson, Head Coach Mary Hegarty and fellow assistant Denise Curry were named three of the 15 greatest women's basketball players in UCLA history. Prior to her collegiate career, Anderson was one of the top prep guards out of San Diego County earning All-CIF honors with a 20-point per game average. Anderson graduated with a degree in sociology from UCLA in 1993, and earned her Master's degree in business administration in 2008.
