LONG BEACH, Calif. - The men's water polo team jumped one spot in the national polls as they were released Wednesday afternoon to claim the fifth spot from Pacific after the 49ers defeated the Tigers 14-12 for fifth-place at the MPSF Tournament.
Coincidentally, this is only the fifth-time that LBSU (24-8, 4-4 MPSF) has finished fifth in the national polls. The only other time the 49ers have ranked higher than fifth was back in 2001 when Long Beach State ended its season fourth.
The last time the 49ers wrapped up their season ranked fifth in the nation was back in 2004 when Rick Azevedo's squad finished 17-12 overall, 4-4 in league, as well as a fifth-place finish.
