Nov. 18, 2009

LONG BEACH, Calif.; - THIS WEEKEND: Fresh off it's upset of No. 8 Loyola Marymount, the No. 6 Long Beach State (9-11, 1-6) men's water polo team will travel to No. 16 Pacific (13-14, 0-7) to take on the Tigers Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. at the Pacific Tiger Campus Pool. The game, the last of the regular season, will determine if the 49ers will compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament next weekend. Saturday's match-up is the first of the season for LBSU and Pacific.

LAST WEEK: The Beach pulled off a upset of No. 6 LMU in their final home game of the season and senior night. Long Beach State was able to hold off a late charge by the Lions in the fourth quarter to even the series with LMU and go 1-1 against the Lions this season.

Alexsandr Petrovic, the 49ers leading scorer, recorded a hat trick to lead 49ers and is the twelfth time this season he has led The Beach in scoring. Seniors Jeff Greenwood, Justin Koeppen each scored goals and Derek Wiebe-Bailey completely shut down the prolific scorers from LMU for much of the game to propel the 49ers to victory.

49ERS IN THE POLLS: The Beach switched places with LMU this week, jumping two places to No. 6, after beating the Lions, 8-6, last week. The 49ers currently have two players in the top twenty for goals scored on the MPSF goals scored list. Alexsandr Petrovic is ninth on the list with 33 goals and Jeff Greenwood is 18th with 30 goals. Derek Wiebe-Bailey is second on the MPSF goalkeeper saves list, averaging 9.45 saves a game. Wiebe-Bailey, who is having another fantastic season after setting the school record for saves last year, has the most saves of any goalie in the MPSF with 189.

SCOUTING PACIFIC: Sophomore Tom Koning, who is the MPSF's sixth leading scorer with 48 goals in 27 games this season, leads Pacific. Goalie David Andrus is ninth in goalie saves on the MPSF saves list with 134.
