No. 7 Men's Water Polo Begins MPSF Play With Two Games This Week

Long Beach, Calif. - No. 7 Long Beach State men's water polo will open up MPSF play this two important matches, first traveling to No. 8 UC Irvine for a Black and Blur Rivalry game on Thursday night. The 49ers then return home to host No. 6 UC Santa Barbara at Noon on Saturday.

The first MPSF game of the season for Long Beach State will be a direct rematch of the team's last game. On Oct. 13, the 49ers closed out the SoCal Tournament with a 13-10 overtime victory against UC Irvine on the road, and will return to the Anteater Aquatics Complex to start conference play on Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Four Overtime Goals Lead 49ers Past No. 9 UC Irvine
Long Beach State outscored the Anteaters by two goals in the fourth quarter, and then tacked on four more in overtime as the 49ers rallied to defeat No. 9 UC Irvine 13-10 in extra time. Devin Mefford and Zacchary Kappos each had three goals for Long Beach State.

Men's Water Polo Nearly Finishes Upset Of UC Santa Barbara Before Overtime Loss
Long Beach State rallied to take a fourth quarter lead against No. 6 UC Santa Barbara and struck in the closing seconds to force overtime, but ultimately lost 8-6 to the Gauchos at the SoCal Tournament. Pavo Ljepopio made 16 saves in his return to the cage for the 49ers.

In that last meeting, Long Beach State received three goals from both Devin Mefford and Zacchary Kappos, as the 49ers rallied to force overtime before dominating the extra time, outscoring the Anteaters 4-1 in the additional periods.

After the team's trip down the 405, Long Beach State returns to the Campus Pool for the team's second home game of the season, hosting No. 6 UC Santa Barbara. The 49ers have had two cracks at defeating the Gauchos, but have fallen just short this season, losing 5-4 at the NorCal Tournament before falling 8-6 in overtime on Oct. 13 at the SoCal Tournament. That match is scheduled to start at Noon on Saturday, October 26.

The two games this week represent the start of Long Beach State's 10-game MPSF schedule. The 49ers will also host Cal, UC San Diego, UCLA and Stanford before traveling to the MPSF Tournament from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1.
