LBSU LOOKS TO TAKE THE SEASON SERIES AGAINST LMU: Long Beach State wraps up non-conference play against No. 9 Loyola Marymount on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Campus Pool. The season-series is currently tied at 1-1 with Long Beach State leading the head-to-head series 20-11.
The 49ers (17-3, 0-0 MPSF)) won their first match-up against the Lions (11-7) at the closing game of the NorCal Tournament winning 9-7 thanks to Dan Matulis, Nolan McConnell, Brian Schiefer, and Carter Taylor each scoring a pair of goals while Milos Vrzic added one.
LMU returned the favor winning the final game of the SoCal Tournament in Santa Barbara on Sept. 30th.
The 49ers come into Thursday's match with a five-game winning-streak on the line.
49ERS OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY AS TROJANS COME TO TOWN: Long Beach State begins conference play Friday against No. 1 USC at 7 p.m. at the Campus Pool.
This is the second time the 49ers have hosted the Trojans (16-0, 2-0 MPSF) for their conference opener since joining the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 1992.
LONG BEACH STATE HANDLES THE TRITONS: The 49ers' defense took care of business in the fourth quarter and held No. 11 UC San Diego scoreless to pick up the win on the road 11-8 at the Canyonview Pool Friday night. Three players recorded multiple goals for LBSU while Balint Meszaros collected nine saves.
UCSD went on a 3-0 run that lasted for 5 minutes and 50 seconds in the second period before Lappas found the back of the cage to bring Long Beach State back within one at the half.
Both teams went on runs in the third exchanging goals. LBSU took a 7-6 lead after its 3-0 run but UCSD scored two unanswered goals to finish the quarter leading 8-7.
The fourth quarter was all Long Beach State as McConnell started the 49ers' rally slamming in a goal at 7:06 to tie the game at eight. Carter Taylor, Spencer White, and Vrzic each added a goal in the fourth for the comeback win.
49ERS BY THE NUMBERS: Last Friday's win against UCSD puts Long Beach State at 10-1 against Western Water Polo Association teams. Loyola Marymount dealt the 49ers their lone loss against opponents in the WWPA.
Dan Matulis is tied for 23rd in goals-scored in a single season coming into this week's match-ups. Matulis' 12-game scoring streak ended Friday against UCSD as the Tritons held Matulis scoreless.
Senior Spencer White is four-goals shy of being tied for 25th on the single-season goals scored list.
With 180 saves on the season and 10 games left to play, Balint Meszaros is on track to have a spot on the top-10 list in school history for saves in a single season and can get as high as 12th for career-saves. Meszaros needs to average just 5.5 saves per game the rest of the season to reach these milestones.
Meszaros surpassed Bryan Schultz (92-93, 152 saves) for 15th on the career-saves list after recording 12 saves against Harvard on October 5th at the Gary Troyer Tournament.
