Long Beach, Calif. - No. 6 Men's Water Polo looks to continue their winning ways this weekend at the Inland Empire Classic, playing all four matches at La Verne. The 49ers start off the weekend with Concordia at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.

The match with Concordia is the first of two on Saturday for the 49ers, who will then face Chapman at 2 p.m. The 49ers then return to action with two more games, playing Whittier at 10:15 a.m. before playing La Verne in its home pool at 12:45 p.m.

Long Beach State has been led by sophomore Nolan McConnell, who scored 11 goals at the Triton Invitational, helping lead the 49ers past a trio of ranked foes in the opening weekend. McConnell was named the MPSF Player of the Week for his work, the first 49er to receive the honor since Steve Mackenzie in 2007.

McConnell is coming off of a summer with the USA Junior National Team, and is expected to be one of the team's leaders, along with junior Milos Vrzic, who scored six goals last weekend, along with Zacchary Kappos, who finished the first weekend second on the team in goals scored behind McConnell with seven.

The program is searching for its best start since the 2005 season, when the 49ers opened the season with a 9-0 record. The 49ers have won their first six matches in each of the last two seasons.
