Sept. 9, 2013
Long Beach, Calif. - Sophomore Nolan McConnell was named the MPSF Player of the Week after leading the 49ers to a 4-0 record with 11 goals at the Triton Invitational this past weekend.
The sophomore attacker helped No. 6 Long Beach State win three matches over ranked opponents, leading the 49ers past both No. 12 Air Force and No. 17 UC Davis with four goals in each game, as well as scoring a pair in a win over No. 13 Loyola Marymount. Averaging 2.75 goals per game on the weekend, McConnell now leads the 49ers with 11 on the season.
McConnell, who earned Honorable Mention All-MPSF honors a year ago as a freshman, becomes the first 49er to be named the MPSF Player of the Week since Steve MacKenzie in October of 2007.
Long Beach State returns to action this weekend at the Inland Empire Classic, playing four games on Friday and Saturday in La Verne, Calif., in a tournament co-hosted by the Leopards.
