Long Beach State Splits Matches To Conclude Triton Invitational

San Diego, Calif. -- As Long Beach State concluded its play at the Triton Invitational Sunday, the team split its matches against Cal and UC Santa Barbara.

Sunday morning, the Beach fell to Cal 14-10 in the first match of the day.

From the opening quarter the Beach trailed Cal 5-2 and were unable to mount a comeback. Nemanja Bakic and Chandler Kaltenbach scored once in the first quarter.

Cal added three goals in the second quarter while Jacob Fujioka and Mitchell Holden scored one. The Beach trailed the Golden Bears 8-4 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Beach got goals from Duncan Lynde, Austin Stewart and Bakic, but Cal also got three goals and took an 11-7 lead.

Cal added three more goals in the fourth quarter to take the 14-7 win.

During Long Beach State's final game of the invitational, the Beach bounced back with a 9-6 win against UC Santa Barbara.

The Beach took a 3-2 lead after the first quarter with goals from Austin Stevenson, Chandler Kaltenbach and Austin Stewart. From then on Long Beach State never let go of the lead.

In the second quarter, Jacob Fujioka and Duncan Lynde each scored to give the Beach a 5-3 lead at halftime.



UCSB scored twice in the third quarter, but a Stewart's second goal gave the Beach a 6-5 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Beach went on to close the game out with goals from Stevenson, Kaltenbach and Lee Griffin to beat the Gauchos 9-6.

In goal, Marwan Darwish was a stalwart coming up with 15 saves in the game.

Long Beach State will be back in action Sept. 9 when the team travels to Redlands for the Inland Empire Tournament.
