Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State was picked to finish in seventh in the preseason MPSF Men's Water Polo Coaches' Poll, released by the conference on Tuesday. The 49ers finished with 23 total points after posting a 24-8 overall record and a fifth place finish one season ago.
The 49ers return eight of their top ten goal-scorers from one season ago, including All-Americans Dan Matulis and Nick Rascon as Long Beach State will look to continue to improve after a tremendous 2012 campaign where the team finished the season ranked No. 5 in the country.
Playing in the difficult MPSF, the 49ers were picked behind defending champion USC, who got the nod for the top spot just in front of Stanford with 61 points and five first place votes. The Cardinal were picked second, getting 60 points and four first-place votes, just behind the Trojans. Pacific followed just behind, while UCLA and California tied for the fourth spot with 41 points each. UCSB was picked to finish in sixth place, just in front of the 49ers.
Long Beach State was tabbed for seventh place, landing in front of UC Irvine and Pepperdine in the nine-team conference. The 49ers open the season on September 7 and 8 in San Diego, participation in the 2013 Triton Invitational.
