Men's Water Polo Wraps Up Season With Sixth Place Finish at MPSF Tournament
Dec. 1, 2013
Stockton, Calif. - Fifth-seeded California topped Long Beach State 17-8 in the third game of the MPSF Tournament for both teams, pulling away from the 49ers in the second half in the final game of the year for The Beach. Milos Vrzic and Patrick Goodenough each scored twice for Long Beach State.
Seeded seventh to start the tournament, Long Beach State (20-14) had already passed expectations, but had a chance for one more upset Sunday against Cal (18-8), but the 49ers surrendered a trio of early goals and never led in the game.
Goodenough scored the first goal for Long Beach State just under the wire in the first quarter, and a score by Dimitios Lappas pulled the 49ers within one at 3-2. Some early foul troubles hampered the 49ers comeback efforts, but LBSU trailed the Bears by just two goals at 7-5 at the end of the second half.
The 49ers would end up losing three players to disqualifications in the end, however, and California was able to capitalize, scoring ten goals in the second half to pull away from Long Beach State in a 17-8 final.
Long Beach State posted its second straight 20-win campaign in 2013; just the seventh in school history. The 49ers are slated to return six starters next season and also welcome back of 2012 All-MPSF selections in Dan Matulis and Nick Rascon, who each redshirted during the 2013 season.
