Stockton, Calif. - Long Beach State got a lift from four goals by Nolan McConnell, and held on to drop the sixth-seeded UC Santa Barbara Gauchos 11-10 in the consolation bracket of the MPSF Tournament.
In the first quarter, McConnell's first goal got the scoring started for both teams, and Long Beach State (20-14) took a 2-0 lead before UC Santa Barbara (16-11) evened the score at the end of the period.
McConnell again kickstarted the 49ers in one of their best quarters to date, as Long Beach State scored five goals in the second to take a 7-4 lead into the second half.
Both teams scored two goals in the third quarter, and the 49ers weathered a late surge from the Gauchos to collect the victory.
With the win, the 49ers picked up their first victory against the Gauchos in four attempts on the season. Long Beach State will finish the season tomorrow at 11:30 a.m., facing California in the fifth-place game.
