Stockton, Calif. - Senior Carter Taylor scored his second goal of the game to give the 49ers a 6-5 lead in the second half over second-seeded Stanford, but the Cardinal scored seven straight goals down the stretch to defeat Long Beach State 12-6 in the MPSF Tournament quarterfinals.
Both teams battled back and forth early with Stanford (20-4) striking first with a goal with six minutes to play in the first quarter. Long Beach State (19-13) evened up the score before the end of the first however at 2-2.
Ricardo Guimares put the 49ers in front for the first time with an extra-man goal with 7:09 remaining, and the teams continued to trade blows. Stanford pushed back out in front at 5-4, but Long Beach State answered with a goal from Zacchary Kappos in the closing seconds to bring a tie game into the second half.
Taylor's goal was the first of the second half, as Long Beach State struck under a minute into the third quarter, but that was the final time the 49ers were able to score as the Stanford defense rebounded. Cardinal goaltender Drew Holland made seven saves in the fourth quarter, and Bret Bonani scored three fourth quarter goals to help Stanford pull away.
Long Beach State continues to play in the consolation bracket tomorrow, where they will face the loser of the (3) UCLA/(6) UC Santa Barbara game at 11:30 a.m.
