Water Polo Loses Regular Season Finale 9-7 at No. 1 Pacific
The 49ers will advance to the MPSF Tournament for either a rematch with the Tigers or Stanford.
Nov. 23, 2013
Stockton, Calif. - Pavo Ljepopio led the 49ers with 18 saves, helping mount a comeback as the 49ers held No. 1 Pacific to a pair of goals in the second half, but the Tigers held on at home in a 9-7 loss for The Beach.
Pacific struck first in the game, picking up a score from Krizstian Laczkovics, and while the 49ers picked up an equalizer from Devin Mefford, the Tigers opened up a 4-2 lead before the end of the first period.
That lead would grow as Balazs Erdelyi would score three unanswered goals in the second quarter, putting Pacific in the lead 7-2 before Mefford struck again to give the 49ers a final goal in the first half.
In the second half, the 49ers outscored the Tigers 4-2, picking up a pair of goals from Milos Vrzic as well as a third score from Mefford, but Long Beach State came up just short in the loss.
Long Beach State will have to wait for the result of Sunday's UC Irvine-Pepperdine game to learn their quarterfinal tournament foe, but the 49ers have secured a postseason berth. The 49ers will either face Pacific once again at home as the No. 8 seed, or advance to the No. 7 seed and play Stanford as their first round opponent on Friday, November 29.
