Long Beach State Beats Pepperdine For Sudden Death Victory

Irvine, Calif. — In a game that went back and forth, No. 6 Long Beach State’s Austin Stewart did what the Beach needed him to do in a moment of high pressure — score.

In sudden death, Stewart delivered the game-winning goal on a penalty shot to give the Beach a 10-9 victory over No. 10 Pepperdine Sunday afternoon in the Golden Coast Conference third-place game.

After Pepperdine (18-14) took an early 2-0 lead with 1:30 in the first quarter, senior Mitchel Holden cut the lead to one when he netted a goal with 43 seconds left to make it 2-1 at the end of the first period.

Sophomore Nemanja Bakic tied the game at midway through the second period and senior Duncan Lynde gave LBSU (15-12) a 3-2 lead when he scored on a pass from Stewart.

After the Waves scored a minute later, LBSU and Pepperdine went into halftime tied at 3.

In the third quarter, Pepperdine put the pressure on as they took a 7-5 lead into the final period. But, LBSU battled back and took an 8-7 lead with 2:49 thanks to goals from Lynde, Bakic and Stewart.

Pepperdine tied the game at 8 when Sam Paur scored with 2:31 remaining which eventually sent the game into overtime.

Junior Keegan Wicken gave LBSU a 9-8 lead when he scored in the first overtime period. The Waves’ Paur kept Pepperdine alive when he scored with 16 seconds left.

After a scoreless second overtime period and first sudden death period, a foul in the second sudden death period allowed Stewart to net the game-winner.
