No. 6 Long Beach State Falls To No. 7 UC Irvine In Semifinal Of GCC Tournament

Irvine, Calif. — No. 6 Long Beach State and No. 7 UC Irvine came together for another installation of the Black and Blue Rivalry in the semifinals of the Golden Coast Conference Tournament Saturday night.

In a heartbreaking loss, the Beach fell to UCI 9-8. LBSU will now face No. 5 Pacific or No. 8 UC Santa Barbara in the third-place game Sunday at 3 p.m.

Junior Austin Stevenson got LBSU (14-12) on the board when he delivered after a pass from redshirt sophomore Austin Stewart to put the Beach up 1-0 with 6:02 left in the first quarter.

LBSU wasn’t done there as senior Jacob Fujioka scored to put the Beach up 2-0 less than a minute later.

UCI (15-9) cut the lead to one when Fynn Schuetze scored with 1:42 left in the opening quarter. LBSU held onto a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.

With 6:24 remaining in the first quarter senior Duncan Lynde scored to give LBSU a 3-1 lead. UCI cut the lead to 3-2 with 1:44 left in the second quarter, but goals from Fujioka and senior Mitchell Holden put the Beach up 5-2 heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, UCI cut the lead to 5-3 with 6:40 remaining, but Stewarts second goal put LBSU up 6-3 only 14 seconds later.

The Anteaters started to put pressure on and Jack Trush cut LBSU’s lead to 6-4 with 4:05 remaining. Trush cut the lead to 6-5 when 46 seconds remaining in the half.

Lynde’s second goal was crucial as he scored 16 seconds later on a 6-on-5 opportunity to give LBSU a 7-5 lead at the end of the third quarter.



In the fourth quarter, both teams battled back and forth before Lovre Milos scored to cut LBSU’s lead to 7-6 with 5:24 remaining.

UCI tied the game at 7 when the Anteaters’ Brendan Duffy scored with 3:46 remaining in the game.

The Anteaters then took an 8-7 lead when Bryant Joudrie scored on a powerplay with 2:35 remaining.

Sophomore Nemanja Bakic came up with a huge goal with 1:14 remaining to tie the game at 8.

UCI then took advantage of another powerplay to take a 9-8 lead with 33 seconds left.

LBSU got a final shot off, but it was saved as the Beach fell to UCI.

Junior Thomas Freeman finished the game with 15 saves.
