Long Beach, Calif. - The 49ers made things interesting, pulling to within one of No. 2 UCLA at 5-4 with 4:07 to play in the third quarter on a Dimitrios Lappas goal, but the Bruins held on to defeat No. 8 Long Beach State 9-5 Saturday.

The return to the Campus Pool for the 49ers got off to a slow start, as Long Beach State (18-9, 1-4 MPSF) surrendered three first period goals to UCLA (24-2, 4-1 MPSF). The 49ers rebounded by getting on the board with a Zacchary Kappos goal to start the second quarter, and held even with the Bruins into the halftime break.

Goaltender Pavo Ljepopio, who had a strong game with 11 saves, had his best quarter in the third as Long Beach State pulled back in the game. Milos Vrzic started off the scoring the period, and then Lappas' goal with 4:07 remaining brought the 49ers back within one.

UCLA was able to answer that goal just before the end of the period, however, and scored the first three goals in the fourth before Devin Mefford tallied a score just before the end of the game.

Long Beach State closes out the home season by hosting No. 4 Stanford at Noon tomorrow.
