LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 49ers couldn't keep up with No. 2 UCLA as No. 7 LBSU fell to the Bruins 13-8 Saturday afternoon at the Spieker Aquatics Center. Milos Vrzic led LBSU with a three goals while Dan Matulis chipped in with two.
Nolan McConnell scored with five seconds left on the clock in the first period put the 49ers within three. Nick Rascon could've brought Long Beach State within two at the 1:02 mark in the first on a penalty shot but Matt Rapacz got a hand on the ball as the Bruins led 5-2
That was the closest Long Beach State got as the Bruins held LBSU scoreless after McConnell's goal for 11 minutes and 22 seconds before Matulis found the back of the cage at 4:43 in the third.
Vrzic scored on a penalty shot at the 48 second mark before Zacchary Kappos found the back of the cage with 10 seconds left in the third period as the Bruins led 10-5 heading into the final frame.
The 49ers' Vrzic collected his hat trick at the 4:46 mark on a 6-on-5 advantage to make it 11-6 UCLA before the Bruins responded with back-to-back goals to extend their lead to 13-6. Matulis and Lappas each scored within 37 second of each other making it 13-8 but it was too late as UCLA held on for the win.
Balint Meszaros finished with seven saves for the 49ers.
Long Beach State returns to action Sunday Nov. 4th against No. 7 Pacific at the Campus Pool. Ball is set to drop at noon.
