Oct. 31, 2015

Long Beach, Calif. -

LBSU fought hard against No. 5 Stanford after a pretty even first three quarters, but couldn’t make up the deficit in the fourth falling to the Cardinal 12-8.

The Cardinal came out putting LBSU in a 2-0 hole with goals from Adam Abdulhamid and Bret Bonnani. Abdulhamid scored just 30 seconds into the match while Bonnani scored his 332nd career goal on a 5-meter penalty shot.

The Beach fired back, though, scoring three consecutive goals to answer. Senior Dimitrios Lappas and redshirt freshman Austin Stevenson put LBSU on the board with goals a minute apart.

Senior Josh Tice gave his team the 3-2 lead after a steal on the defensive end led to a nice goal inside for Tice. On the next possession, an exclusion from the Beach led to a goal from Stanford’s Connor Stapleton to even the match.

Freshman Keegan Wicken gave the Beach the one-point advantage to end the first quarter with a perimeter shot that bounced inside the goal.

Stanford goalie Drew Holland blanked LBSU in the second quarter, while the Cardinal continued to score a pair of goals from Reid Chase and Bonnani to go into the half with a 5-4 lead.

Senior Pavo Ljepopio notched a couple of big saves in the second quarter to keep Stanford from scoring more, totaling four saves in the period. Ljepopio had eight big saves going into the second half.

Both teams traded goals in the third quarter as Stanford’s B.J. Churnside struck first from an exclusion on the Beach. Bonnani scored his third and fourth goals in the quarter.

Sophomores Jacob Fujioka and Lovro Miocevic scored their only goals of the match in the quarter, while Wicken netted his second off a Stanford exclusion to end the third 8-7 in favor of the Cardinal.

Stanford controlled most of the fourth quarter. Holland had four saves in the period as LBSU attempted to come back from the one-goal deficit, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. Wicken had the lone goal for the Beach with 25 seconds left to play with a nice lob shot from the perimeter to complete his hat trick.

Four different Stanford players scored in the final quarter to give them their final 12 goals.

Ljepopio finished with 11 goals in the match and Holland with 13.
