Malibu, Calif. - Long Beach State (14-6, 1-3) rode four goals from Nick Rascon to a 14-12 (2OT) victory over Pepperdine (12-8, 2-3) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool in Malibu, Calif.
Rascon scored two of his four goals in the two overtime periods, while Dan Matulis scored two of his three goals in extra time. His goal with 2:28 remaining in the first overtime proved to be the game-winning goal.
Mefford broke a 9-9 tie, scoring with 0:17 seconds remaining in the game. Pepperdine scored with only two seconds remaining to force the two overtime periods.
The contest was a seesaw battle, with the largest lead of three early in the third quarter. There were 11 ties and lead changes in the match.
John Mrochtotaled eight saves in the victory for LBSU.
Long Beach State travels to rival UC Irvine on Thursday at 7 p.m. for a MPSF match.
