Late rally not enough as 49ers fall to Stanford 12-11

STANFORD, Calif. - The ninth-ranked 49ers fell short after a late rally in the fourth to No. 4 Stanford 12-11 at the Avery Aquatics Complex Sunday afternoon. Three players recorded multiple goals for the 49ers. The 49ers took a 5-4 lead after Zacchary Kappos slammed a goal past Scott Platshon with 21 seconds left in the half. The Cardinals then rallied in the third behind Alex Bowen's hat trick to take an 8-7 lead coming into the final period. Nolan McConnell tried to start a rally with a goal at 7:04 in the fourth but the Cardinals played even with the 49ers the entire final period. Dan Matulis finished the game with a hat trick while Milos Vrzic and McConnell each chipped in with a pair of goals.
