Oct. 26, 2013
Long Beach, Calif. - Zacchary Kappos and Carter Taylor each scored a pair of goals for the 49ers, but Long Beach State fell behind early after a big second quarter from No. 6 UC Santa Barbara and never recovered in a 9-6 defeat Saturday.
No. 7 Long Beach State (17-6, 1-1 MPSF) struck first, as Nolan McConnell found the back of the net against UC Santa Barbara (15-5, 2-1 MPSF) to give the 49ers a 1-0 lead. Eric Van de Mortel hit the equalizer for the Gauchos however, and Matt Gronow scored in the final minute to give UCSB a 2-1 lead after one.
The Guachos opened up the game in the second quarter. Both teams scored twice in the first four minutes of the quarter, but UC Santa Barbara picked up three unanswered down the stretch to halftime to open up a 7-3 lead.
Long Beach State held strong defensively in the third period, holding the Gauchos off of the board, but only scored one goal themselves in the period. A Derek Shoemaker goal with 4:29 to play allowed the Gauchos to play keep away the rest of the game, and the 49ers ultimately fell 9-6 with the final 49er goal coming off of a Devin Mefford breakaway.
The 49ers continue MPSF action with two games next week, traveling to No. 9 Pepperdine for a Noon meeting with the Waves on Saturday, November 2, before hosting No. 5 California on Sunday at Noon in the Campus Pool.
