Taylor's Monster Game Leads 49ers Past No. 8 UC Irvine
Oct. 24, 2013
Irvine, Calif. - No. 7 Long Beach State opened up MPSF competition with a strong win, taking down No. 8 UC Irvine 9-6 on the road. Senior Carter Taylor scored a career-high four goals to lead the offense, while Pavo Ljepopio made 10 saves for the 49ers.
Long Beach State (17-5, 1-0 MPSF) opened up a quick 2-0 lead as Taylor scored the first two goals of the contest, but UC Irvine (11-7, 0-2 MPSF) rallied back, tying the game at 2-2 on a 5-on-4 goal. The Anteaters then took their first lead in the closing seconds of the first period with a goal from Mitch Wise.
Both teams scored twice in the second quarter, as UCI goaltender Michael Bailey turned back a Ricardo Guimares penalty in the period to hold onto a one-goal edge into the break.
Taylor pulled the 49ers even however with a goal following an Anteater exclusion with 4:15 to play in the third, and Long Beach State pulled in front for good at 6-5 when Devin Mefford corralled a rebound and scored on the second-chance opportunity with 1:57 in the third. Guimares scored for the 49ers on the next trip down the pool as the 49ers opened up a two-goal edge, while Ljepopio and the 49ers held the Anteaters off the board in the quarter.
Ljepopio came up with a big save for the 49ers as Long Beach State turned back two straight extra man opportunities for UC Irvine to start off the fourth quarter, and Cater Taylor put the match out of reach with his fourth goal, squeaking a shot past Alex Kazmier from an impossible angle under the five-minute mark. Guimares picked up the final goal of the contest on a breakaway following a steal in the final minute.
With the win, the 49ers also extended their lead in the Black and Blue Rivalry series to 6-0 early on in the 2013-14 school year.
Long Beach State returns home to the Campus Pool Saturday, hosting No. 6 UC Santa Barbara at Noon.
