Long Beach State Defeats UCSD In Sudden Death Overtime
Austin Stewart nets game-winner in second sudden death period to give the Beach the win.
Long Beach, Calif. — In a thrilling four-overtime game against No. 13 UC San Diego, redshirt sophomore Austin Stewart sent No. 8 Long Beach State into pure jubilation when he netted the game-winning goal to give the Beach an 11-10 sudden death victory over the Tritons.
“It was huge,” Stewart said of the win. “We needed some momentum going into our rival game against (UCSB) and we need more momentum and we needed something like that to bring us up.”
After LBSU (10-9, 0-2) took an early 2-1 lead after goals from senior Duncan Lynde and Stewart, UCSD scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead after the first quarter.
The Beach’s defense tightened up in the second quarter as LBSU tied the game at 4 heading into halftime thanks to goals from junior Austin Stevenson and Lynde.
