49ers held Tritons scoreless in the fourth for the win

LA JOLLA, Calif. - No. 10 Long Beach State held No. 11 UC San Diego scoreless in the fourth to beat the Tritons 11-8 at the Canyonview Pool in La Jolla, Calif. Friday night. Milos Vrzic and Nolan McConnell led the 49ers (17-3) with three goals each. Dimitrios Lappas chipped in with two goals. The Tritons took a 4-2 lead early in the second quarter with three unanswered goals before Dimitrios Lappas cut the lead to one with a goal with 59 seconds to play in the half. Both teams went on runs in the third quarter. After the two teams exchanged goals, LBSU took a 7-6 lead with a 3-0 run. UCSD (7-6) answered with a pair of goals to end the third quarter with an 8-7 lead. LBSU roared back outscoring UCSD 4-0 in the fourth quarter to pick up the win. McConnell started the rally with the tying goal with 7:06 to play, before Carter Taylor, Spencer White, and Vrzic each added a goal to wrap up the victory. Balint Mezaros finished with nine saves. Long Beach State returns to action next week hosting a pair of games. The 49ers face No. 9 Loyola Marymount on Thursday and opens conference play Friday against No. 1 USC. Both games start at 7 p.m. at the Campus Pool.
