Whittier, Calif. - No. 7 Long Beach State began weekend action Friday with a 9-8 win over No. 11 Concordia, winning the first of four matches the 49ers will play this weekend. Carter Taylor had three goals to lead the 49ers.
Long Beach State (11-3) was able to avenge one of their three losses with the victory, a one-goal loss back on September 14. The 49ers took a 3-2 lead after the opening period, and then stretched that lead to three goals with a strong second quarter. Conner Reilly, Nolan McConnell, and Carter Taylor all scored for the 49ers in the second.
Both teams scored a pair of goals in the third period, with the 49ers still holding a three-goal edge over Concordia (8-3) with the score 8-5. Long Beach State was able to hold off a late surge from the Eagles, holding on to win the game 9-8.
Long Beach State will play one additional match on Friday, facing Whittier in their home pool at 7 p.m.
