SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Long Beach State rebounded from an 11-10 loss at the hands of Pacific in the morning to beat St. Francis 12-4 Saturday afternoon in day one of the SoCal Men's Water Polo Tournament.

Dan Matulis led the 49ers (11-2) with four goals in the two games.

Game 1: No. 8 Pacific 11, No. 9 Long Beach State 10

The 49ers dropped their opening game at the SoCal Tournament to the Tigers 11-10. Three different players scored multiple goals for LBSU in the loss.

LBSU's defense kept the game close but the 49ers couldn't capitalize on opportunities throughout the game. Spencer White missed on a penalty shot that would have tied the game with 5:34 left in the game. The miss came just a minute after he had converted an earlier penalty shot.

The Tigers (6-4) pushed the lead to two, before Dimitrios Lappas countered with a goal from the left side to pull the 49ers within one goal with 2:57 left in the fourth.

Seven players scored for LBSU while Zacchary Kappos, Matulis, and Lappas, each found the back of the net twice.

Balint Meszros recorded 11 saves for LBSU.

Game 2: No. 9 Long Beach State 12, No. 19 St. Francis 4

The 49ers bounced back from a tough loss in the morning to defeat St. Francis 12-4 to wrap up the first day of the tournament. Nine players scored for LBSU with three players scoring multiple goals.

The 49er defense led the way for Long Beach State as it kept the Terriers (7-6) outside the five-meter area for most of the game.

LBSU broke open the game with a 9-0 run that spanned for 23 minutes and 12 seconds from the first to fourth quarter. In that stretch, the 49ers had seven different players score.

Joey Fabian, Nick Rascon, and Matulis each recorded two goals for LBSU, while Meszaros collected 10 saves.

The 49ers play Air Force (6-4) Sunday at 10:40 a.m. at the UCSB Campus Pool.
