Sept. 27, 2013
Long Beach, Calif. - Princeton tied the game at 4-4 with 3:04 remaining in the third quarter, but Long Beach State roared back with four unanswered goals in the period and held on to take an 11-7 victory over the Tigers in the 49ers' home opener at the Campus Pool.
No. 7 Long Beach State (10-3) defended their home territory in their first match in the Campus Pool in the 2013 campaign. It was Princeton (7-1) that got off to a quick start however, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal from Kayj Shannon in the first quarter. Dimitrios Lappas picked up the equalizer for the 49ers however, and Long Beach State took the lead for the first time 3-2 in the closing seconds of the quarter on a goal from Conner Reilly.
In a quick second quarter, Long Beach State scored the only goal in the final seconds, and held a 4-2 lead going into the second half. Princeton was able to clamp down defensively on the 49ers, however, and pulled even with Long Beach State on a goal from Sam Butler with just over three minutes remaining.
Devin Mefford put the 49ers back on top with a brilliant backhanded goal 5-4, and then Carter Taylor scored two goals in the span of 18 seconds, catching one directly off of a block from Princeton goalie Alex Gow and firing again as Long Beach State took a 7-4 lead. Milos Vrzic piled on one more to make the score 8-4 before the Tigers found the net in the final possession of the quarter.
The 49ers outscored the Tigers in the final quarter 3-2 to extend their lead, and held on to defeat their sixth ranked opponent of the season in front of 539 fans.
Long Beach State returns to the Campus Pool tomorrow, September 28, for their annual alumni match at Noon. The 49ers next official action will be against Chapman in a neutral-site match in Whittier on Friday, October 4.
