49ers Rally Past Pepperdine To Close NorCal Tournament

Berkeley, Calif. - Down by a goal entering the fourth quarter, Long Beach State scored four goals while holding No. 10 Pepperdine scoreless in the final period to take a 9-6 win over the Waves. Carter Taylor scored three goals to lead the 49ers.

Long Beach State (9-3) got on the board first, as Taylor picked up the first of his three goals on the day, but Pepperdine (3-4) scored twice to take the lead after the initial period. The 49ers were able to even up the halftime score with a late goal from Devin Mefford and entered the third tied 4-4.

Pepperdine again struck first in the second half, taking a 5-4 lead on a goal from Marko Madaras, and finished off the third quarter with a 6-5 lead over Long Beach State.

In the final period, sophomore Nolan McConnell tied the game at 6-6 with the first goal of the quarter, and then Long Beach State regained their first lead since 1-0 with a Zacchary Kappos goal with 5:55 left to play in the game. The 49ers added an insurance goal from Mefford in the next minute, and held on with one final goal from Taylor for a 9-6 victory.

Sophomore goaltender Pavo Ljepopio finished with six saves as well as shutting out the Waves in the final quarter.

Long Beach State will host their home opener this Friday, when the 49ers bring Princeton to the Campus Pool for a 7 p.m. match.
