49ers Open NorCal Tournament With Win Over No. 8 Loyola Marymount

Berkeley, Calif. - Long Beach State opened up the NorCal Tournament with a win, taking down No. 8 Loyola Marymount 13-9 in the team's first of four games this weekend. Zacchary Kappos led the 49ers with five goals against the Lions.
Carter Taylor helped the 49ers hold even with LMU in the first quarter, scoring a pair of goals as the 49ers got off to a hot start. Loyola Marymount (2-4) fell behind 2-0 to the Long Beach State, but eventually took their only lead of the day at 4-3 on a goal from Matt Stipanovich. The 49ers answered back with a goal from Devin Mefford, and tied the game heading into the second quarter.
Long Beach State (8-1) took over the game in the second, as Kappos picked up a pair in that quarter as the 49ers opened up an 8-5 lead to head into halftime. The 49ers outscored the Lions 4-1 in the period, opening up a lead they would never relinquish.
The 49ers held even with the Lions in the third period, with each team scoring three goals, and the Long Beach State outscored the Lions in the final period 2-1 to give the 49ers a four-goal edge in the final tally.
Long Beach State will continue their time in Berkeley with a second game Saturday, scheduled for 6:10 p.m. when the 49ers play the host Golden Bears. California is currently ranked No. 4 in the CWPA Poll.
