49ers finishes NorCal Tournament with two wins

Nolan McConnell scored a goal with three minutes left in the game against LMU to secure the win.

Stanford, Calif. - Long Beach State swept a pair of games on Sunday beating UC Davis 10-9 and Loyola Marymount 9-7 to wrap up the NorCal Tournament. The 49ers finished the tournament in ninth place with a 3-1 record.

Game 1: #9 Long Beach State 10, #12 UC Davis 9

The 49ers (9-1) survived a late rally by the Aggies (5-4) in the fourth quarter to hang on for the 10-9 win. UC Davis scored four goals in the final three minutes, but could never get closer than one goal.

Dan Matulis led the 49ers with four goals and Carter Taylor chipped in two.

Balint Meszaros collected eight saves in the win.

Game 2: #9 Long Beach State 9, #10 Loyola Marymount 7

Matulis and Nolan McConnell both scored in a 30 seconds stretch to break a tie with three minutes to play and give the 49ers the win over the Lions in Sunday's late game.

Brian Schiefer, McConnell, Taylor, and Matulis each scored two for LBSU with Milos Vrzic adding one.

After the Lions (3-3) tied the score at seven, Matulis hit a straightaway shot at the 3:30 mark on a pass from Vrzic. McConnell found the back of the net with a drop shot to the left side to give the 49ers a two-goal lead.

Meszros recorded eight saves, with two coming on penalty shots in the second quarter. Meszaros finished the four-game tournament with 38 saves.
