49ers Finish Perfect Weekend With 9-8 Win Over Loyola Marymount

La Jolla, Calif. - No. 6 Long Beach State closed out a memorable first weekend, closing out a perfect 4-0 start with a 9-8 victory over No. 12 Loyola Marymount on Sunday. Zacchary Kappos score three goals to help the 49ers hold on to the victory.
Long Beach State (4-0) struck quickly with a 6:26 goal from Noaln McConnell, and Carter Taylor followed with a second goal as the 49ers took 2-0 lead in the first quarter. Loyola Marymount (1-3) scored one goal in the first period, but the 49ers answered with a Dimitrios Lappas score to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.
LMU scored the only goal in the second quarter, but Long Beach State held on to the lead and opened up the contest in the third. McConnell scored again to give the 49ers a 4-2 lead, and Long Beach State picked up two more in a row to open a 6-2 advantage.
Up 7-4 after the third, Kappos scored two straight goals in the fourth quarter to help the 49ers hold onto the lead, the last coming with 3:29 remaining for a 9-7 lead, and LMU posted its final goal in the closing seconds as the 49ers started the season unbeaten with a fourth win in the Triton Invitational.
Long Beach State will hit the road once again next weekend, playing in the Inland Empire tournament in Redlands, Calif. on September 14-15.
