49ers win two games during first day of Inland Empire Tournament
LA VERNE, Calif. - Dan Matulis scored six goals in two games to lead Long Beach State past Pomona-Pitzer 15-4 and La Verne 16-6 during day one of the Inland Empire Tournament. Spencer White had five goals while five other 49ers scored multiple goals.
Balint Meszaros had 18 saves in the two wins.
The 49ers (4-0) play Occidental to start day two of the tournament at 10:15 a.m. Sunday in Claremont, followed by a game against Air Force at 1:45 p.m in Claremont.
Game 1: Long Beach State 15, Pomona-Pitzer 4
Matulis and White led the 49ers with four goals apiece in the win. Meszaros, who only played in the first half of the route, had six saves and Karatay, who saw his first action in the season playing the second half, had a game-high nine saves.
White scored three of his four goals in a four-minute span in the first quarter. Matulis followed suit scoring three of his own in the second quarter.
Game 2: Long Beach State 16, La Verne 6
Dimitrios Lappas led the 49ers with a game-high three goals against the Leopards to help the 49ers complete the two-game sweep.
Junior Nathan McConnell scored two goals in less than a minute in the first quarter to help LBSU get out to a 5-1 lead Freshman Nolan McConnell chipped in back-to-back goals of his own in the third quarter, while Matulis added two goals.
Meszaros finished with 12 saves, six coming in the third quarter.
