La Jolla, Calif. - No. 6 Long Beach State finished the first day of the regular season 2-0 after a 10-4 victory over Cal Lutheran at the Triton Invitational in San Diego. Senior Carter Taylor led the 49ers with three goals, including two in the first quarter.
Sophomore Devin Mefford also had three goals for Long Beach State, as the 49ers took an early lead against Cal Lutheran (0-2) and never looked back. Long Beach State (2-0) took a 1-0 lead with 6:51 remaining in the first period, and both Mefford and Taylor scored after that goal to pace the 49ers to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.
The 49ers continued to hold CLU off of the board in a dominant first half defensive performance, while adding three more goals of their own to take a 6-0 lead into the second half.
Another goal from Taylor gave the 49ers a 7-0 lead over CLU before the Kingsmen scored with 5:09 in the third period to break the shutout. The 49ers scored three more goals from that point, however, while CLU scored two final goals in the fourth quarter to account for the final tally.
