IRVINE, Calif. - Four players scored their first-career goals as the Long Beach men's water polo team opened the season with two wins at the UCI Tournament Saturday beating Redlands 17-5 and Chapman 16-7.
Senior Spencer White, a transfer from Cal, and Dan Matulis led the 49ers (2-0) with six goals apiece in the two games. Sophomore Joey Fabian added four goals, while sophomore goalie Balint Meszaros finished with a combined 21 saves in the two wins.
Game 1: Long Beach State 17, Redlands 5
After a slow start, the 49ers broke open the game with a 9-0 run that stretched from the 5:01 mark of the second quarter deep into the third quarter when Redlands finally scored with 1:57 to play in the period. Seven different 49ers scored during the stretch extending the lead to 14-3.
Matulis, a junior, opened the scoring for the 49ers getting the first of his three goals with six minutes to play in the first period. Freshman Nolan McConnell notched his first collegiate goal at 4:38 on a pass from Carter Taylor to put the 49ers on top 2-0. Michael Robinson quickly answered with a goal to cut the lead in half for Redlands.
White scored a pair of first-period goals to give LBSU a 5-2 lead after one quarter. He added two goals in the second period and finished the game with a team-high five goals. Fabian netted three of the 49ers' seven goals in the third period.
Goalie Balint Meszaros picked up his first win in the net for the 49ers finishing with eight saves.
Nathan McConnell, Barry Snyder, Milos Vrzic, Dimitrios Lappas, and Garrett Rhodes each had one goal to round out the scoring for Long Beach State. The Rhodes and Lappas goals were the first of their careers.
Game 2: Long Beach State 16, Chapman University 8
Long Beach State took advantage of early Chapman turnovers to jump out to a 3-0 lead three minutes into the game, before adding another goal two minutes later to extend the lead to 4-0.
Nine different 49ers scored as Long Beach State wrapped up the UCI Tournament with a pair of wins. Meszaros finished the game with a career-high 13 saves.
Matulis and Brian Schiefer led the 49ers with three goals apiece in the game. Both McConnell brothers scored two goals apiece, as did Lappas. White, Fabian, Vrzic, and Carter Taylor each scored a goal.
The 49ers (2-0) return to action next Saturday at the Inland Empire Classic taking on Pomona-Pitzer at 12:45 p.m. and La Verne at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at La Verne. LBSU will then face off against Occidental at 10:15 a.m. and Air Force at 1:45 in Claremont.
