Long Beach State Tied for First in 2014 MPSF Men's Volleyball Preseason Poll
Dec. 12, 2013
LONG BEACH - The 49ers were picked to finish in a tie for first in the 2014 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Volleyball Coaches' Preseason Poll the conference office announced Thursday afternoon.
LBSU's first-place ranking in the MPSF came a day after it was tabbed No. 4 in the national AVCA Division I-II Men's Coaches' Top-15 Preseason Poll.
In the MPSF poll, both Long Beach State and BYU, who were pitted against each other in last year's MPSF Tournament final, received three first-place votes and 126 total points to share the top spot. They were followed by two-time defending national champion UC Irvine, which came in third with 125 points despite collecting six first-place nods. UCLA claimed the final first-place vote and took fourth with 117 points.
The 2014 preseason poll marked one of the tightest in MPSF history as the top-three were separated by just one point.
Long Beach State is coming off a remarkable campaign that included a runner-up finish in both the MPSF regular season and the MPSF Tournament. The 49ers finished the year with a 24-8 overall record and an 18-6 mark in conference matches.
LBSU returns a strong core of 13 letterwinners and five starters from last year's team, including reigning AVCA National Player of the Year Taylor Crabb (Sr., OH). The 49ers also welcome back second-team All-American Connor Olbright (Sr., S), and All-MPSF selections Dalton Ammerman (Sr., OH), Taylor Gregory (So., MB) and Andrew Sato (So., L).
Long Beach State will host three exhibition matches before officially opening the season at the UCSB Asics Invitational in Santa Barbara, Jan. 3-4.
