Men’s Volleyball Chosen Second in AVCA Preseason Poll

LONG BEACH – The Long Beach State men’s volleyball team earned a No. 2 ranking in the AVCA Division I-II Men’s Coaches Top-15 Poll it was announced on Thursday.

The Beach were chosen second after finishing the 2017 season with a 27-4 overall record marking the fourth-most wins in program history as they made their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Final Four.

Long Beach State claimed second after collecting 345 points with four first-place votes to come in behind defending National Champion Ohio State which totaled 361 points and 19 first-place votes.

Following the Beach in the preseason poll were BYU (326 points, one first-place vote) and UCLA (297 points, one first-place vote). Fellow Big West Conference member Hawaii took the No. 5 spot after collecting 274 points, while Lewis came in sixth with 248 points, and UC Irvine placed seventh with 204 points.

Stanford (194 points), Penn State (172 points) and Pepperdine (163 points) took the eight, nine and ten spots, respectively. Meanwhile, CSUN (99 points), USC (89 points), and Loyola Chicago (76 points), came in 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th.

Rounding out the preseason poll were Ball State (68 points) and Grand Canyon (55 points), respectively.

Long Beach State starts the year in the Big West Conference and kicks off the season on Wednesday, Jan. 3 when the Beach hosts McKendree at 7 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid.
