Oct. 15, 2012
LONG BEACH - Long Beach State head men's volleyball coach Alan Knipe has announced the 49ers' schedule for the upcoming 2013 season.
Knipe returns to Long Beach State for his 10th year at the helm of the program after taking a leave of absence to coach the U.S. Men's National Team.
LBSU kicks off the 2013 campaign at the annual UCSB Invitational, Jan. 4-5. The 49ers then get right into their always tough Mountain Pacific Sports Federation slate the following week, as they head back to Santa Barbara on Jan. 9 for their conference opener against the Gauchos.
Long Beach State also makes the short trip to UCLA (Jan. 15), before playing in front of its home crowd for the first time of the season with back-to-back matches against Hawaii at the Walter Pyramid, Jan. 18-19.
After hitting the road for four-straight matches, the 49ers return to Long Beach for 12 of their next 13 contests. They will entertain Pepperdine (Feb. 6), reigning MPSF regular season champion USC (Feb. 8), Stanford (Feb. 15) and Pacific (Feb. 16). Following a single road match at Cal State Northridge on Feb. 22, LBSU then starts a season-long eight-match homestand by hosting UC Santa Barbara (March 1).
Long Beach State also welcomes UC San Diego (March 6), defending NCAA Champion UC Irvine (March 9) and UCLA (March 13) to the Walter Pyramid, before hosting George Mason and IPFW in the annual Active Ankle Tournament, March 15-16. LBSU then resumes conference play against Cal Baptist (March 21) and BYU (March 23).
The 49ers will be back on the road the next two weekends, traveling to Pacific (March 29), Stanford (March 30), USC (April 4) and Pepperdine (April 6), before closing out the regular season at home against Cal State Northridge on April 13.
The MPSF Tournament is slated for April 20-27, while the NCAA Championships will be held at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, May 2-4.
Long Beach State finished the 2012 season with a 15-15 overall record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the MPSF Tournament. The 49ers return outside hitter Taylor Crabb, who led the team in kills (303) and ranked second in digs (210) last year. They also welcome back starting setter Connor Olbright (10.40 assists/set).
