Alcohol Sales To Resume During Long Beach State Athletic Events
Beer and Wine will be available at the Walter Pyramid concession stands beginning on October 27.
Long Beach, Calif. - Fans attending Long Beach State games in the Walter Pyramid will once again be able to purchase beer and wine in the venue following a change from the California State University, removing the prior prohibition on the sale and service of alcoholic beverages at intercollegiate athletic events.
Executive Order 1109 was issued on June 30, 2017, allowing the 23 CSU campuses to decide whether to reinstate alcohol sales in on-campus venues. That order was the result of an examination of the practices of numerous other higher education institutions.
“We want to provide the same kind of amenities that fans expect now at sporting events such as Dodgers or Lakers games,” said Athletics Director Andy Fee. “One of my focuses when I took the job was to really engage with our fans in a different way than before in hopes to improve the fan experience and the game day experience.”
“We want to do this in a safe environment for our fans and families,” Fee continued. “Our fans are and supporters are important to our success and this change is the first of several we will be implementing over the next year.”
The change marks the first time since 2005 that beer and wine will be sold at Long Beach State sporting events within the Walter Pyramid, following Executive Order 966 which had banned the sale of alcoholic beverages in on-campus venues at all CSU Institutions. Blair Field, as an off-campus facility, was exempted from that executive order.
Sales will commence at both concession stands within the Walter Pyramid beginning on October 27 when Women’s Volleyball hosts UC Davis, and then will be continued throughout the entirety of the season for Men’s and Women’s Basketball as well as Men’s Volleyball.
Long Beach State is working with 49er shops as well as California Alcoholic Beverage Control to make sure that all regulations are followed and that a safe and responsible environment will be maintained at all LBSU sporting events under this new policy.
Discussions are also ongoing about the possibility of alcohol sales at other ticketed events on campus at George Allen Field, the LBSU Softball Complex, the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Complex, and Jack Rose Track.
