U.S. Men's Volleyball Team finishes tied for fifth at 2012 Olympic Games
Aug. 8, 2012 LONG BEACH - The U.S. Men's Volleyball Team saw its Olympic journey come to an end on Wednesday (Aug. 8) as it fell to Italy, 28-26, 25-20, 25-20 in the knockout quarterfinal round at Earls Court in London. The United States finished the 2012 Olympic Games in a tie for fifth with a 4-2 overall record. The Americans took the top spot in Pool B after going 4-1 in the preliminary round. Italy came out of Pool A as the fourth seed and will advance to the semifinals to face top-ranked Brazil. In pool play, the U.S. defeated Serbia and Germany in straight sets before upsetting No. 1 Brazil, 3-1. After falling to second-ranked Russia in five sets, Team USA clinched first place in the pool with a win over Tunisia. Italy was the fourth-place team in Pool A with a 3-2 record. The U.S. Men's Volleyball Team was led by head coach Alan Knipe, who is on a leave of absence as the Long Beach State head men's volleyball coach.
