Trio of former 49ers selected to 2012 U.S. Olympic Men's Volleyball Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Volleyball has announced its nominations for the U.S. Olympic Men's Volleyball Team that will compete at the 2012 Summer Games in London. The 12-man roster includes former 49ers David Lee, Paul Lotman and David McKienzie.
Pending approval from the U.S. Olympic Committee, the nominated athletes and staff will represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games, July 29-Aug. 12, in London. The U.S. Men are the defending Olympic champions and are ranked sixth in the world.
David Lee, a middle blocker from Alpine, Calif., will be competing in his second Olympic Games as he was a key member of the 2008 squad that won the Gold Medal in Beijing.
Outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.) and opposite David McKienzie (Littleton, Colo.) will both be competing in their first Olympic Games.
Alan Knipe, who is on a leave of absence as the head coach at Long Beach State, is in his fourth season with the national team and had a 52-27 record heading into 2012. This year, the U.S. Men have a record of 14-3, including winning the NORCECA Men's Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament in Long Beach, and also recently winning their World League pool to advance to the Final Round. The squad begins action at the FIVB World League Final today against Germany in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The U.S. Men open the London Olympic Games against Serbia on July 29.
