LONG BEACH - The International Volleyball Federation has announced the 2012 Olympic Games indoor volleyball preliminary round schedules that will take place July 28-Aug. 12 at Earls Court in London.
The U.S. Men's Volleyball Team is led by head coach Alan Knipe, who was at the helm of the 49er program for nine seasons before taking a leave of absence to coach the national team. Knipe was also a three-year letterwinner at Long Beach State and helped the 1991 team to the national championship.
The U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team, which is currently ranked sixth in the world, starts Olympic competition on July 29 against No. 7 Serbia at 8:45 a.m. PT. The U.S. then challenges No. 13 Germany on July 31 at 8:45 a.m. PT.
On the middle day of pool play, Team USA meets top-ranked Brazil in a rematch of the 2008 Olympic Games Gold Medal match at noon PT on Aug. 2. The American team then faces 2011 FIVB World Cup champion and second-ranked Russia on Aug. 4 at 8:45 a.m. PT before concluding pool play on Aug. 6 against No. 18 Tunisia at noon PT.
The top four teams in each six-team pool advance to the quarterfinal round on Aug. 8. The men's semifinal round is set for Aug. 10 and the medal round matches will take place on Aug. 12.
The U.S. Men are currently on a six-match FIVB World League win streak and sit in first place in Pool C with a 7-2 record. Two weekends ago in Lyon, France, Team USA topped previous pool leader Italy in three sets (June 15) and followed with four-set wins over Korea (June 16) and France (June 17).
The U.S. also swept its pool play round in Gwangju, Korea, June 22-24. They defeated Italy (3-1), France (3-0) and Korea (3-0). Former 49ers David Lee, Paul Lotman and David McKienzie all saw playing time over the past two weekends.
Team USA will host their final three pool play matches June 29-July 1 in Dallas, Texas. The winner of each of the four FIVB World League pools, plus the top second-place team and host-country Bulgaria will advance to the FIVB World League Final Round, held July 4-8 in Sofia.
