Former 49ers return to Walter Pyramid for NORCECA Men's Olympic Qualifier

Former 49er trio converge for shot at London - by Bob Keisser (Press-Telegram) LONG BEACH - USA Volleyball will host the eight-team NORCECA Men's Continental Qualification Tournament at the Walter Pyramid, May 7-12. It is the first time that the United States has ever hosted this event. The winner of the tournament with teams from the NORCECA (North America, Central America and the Caribbean) confederation will qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The other teams competing are Cuba, Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. Cuba is ranked fifth in the FIVB world rankings, one spot head of the U.S. men. Three former 49ers are on the active roster for the NORCECA qualifier, including David Lee, a member of the 2008 Olympic Gold Medal Team, Paul Lotman and Dave McKienzie. The squad is also led by Alan Knipe, who took a leave of absence as the head coach at Long Beach State to coach the national team. Knipe had been at the helm of the LBSU program for nine years, leading the team to two NCAA appearances. NORCECA Men's Olympic Qualification Tournament Schedule May 8 May 9
