No. 2 Long Beach State Falls to McMaster in Exhibition Contest
The Beach get a solid performance from freshman Simon Anderson in loss
HAMILTON, ONTARIO – No. 2 Long Beach State dropped a 3-1 [20-25, 23-25, 25-18, 20-25] decision to McMaster in its first exhibition contest of the 2018 season.
The Beach were led by junior opposite Kyle Ensing’s 13 kills and five total blocks. Meanwhile, junior TJ DeFalco and freshman Simon Anderson each tallied 10 kills. Anderson recorded his 10 kills on 16 attempts without making an attack error for a team-best .625 hitting percentage.
DeFalco, along with senior Bjarne Huus, led the team with seven digs as the duo contributed to nearly 50 percent of the team’s digs.
Junior setter Josh Tuaniga dished out 43 assists to lead both teams.
The Beach hit .161 (12-7-31) in the first set as the Marauders hit .200 (10-5-25). The two teams battled in the opening frame fighting each other through nine ties and a pair of lead changes before McMaster came away with the 25-20 win.
Long Beach State had its best offensive output in the second set as they hit .323 (16-6-31) and owned a sideout percentage of 68 percent. Despite their solid effort, the Marauders managed to outhit the Beach turning in a .391 attack percentage (12-3-23). After a close set, McMaster edged out LBSU, 25-23, to take a 2-0 set lead.
Down two sets to none, Long Beach State’s defense kicked into high gear as the Beach forced the Marauders into seven attack errors as McMaster hit a mere .032 in the frame. Meanwhile, LBSU knocked down 10 kills in the set and defeated the hosts 25-18.
The fourth set was another battle as both team’s offenses were on point. The Beach hit .318 (11-4-22), while the Marauders hit .478 (14-3-23). After tying the game five different times, the Beach were unable to overcome McMaster’s offensive attack and ended up dropping the final set by a score of 25-20.
As a team, Long Beach State hit .248 (49-22-109) with 47 assists, 30 digs and 7.0 total team blocks, while McMaster hit .255 (44-18-102) with 43 assists, 28 digs and 10.0 total team blocks.
McMaster was led by Andrew Richards’ 15 kills, while Brandon Koppers and Matt Passalent each notched 10 kills. David Doty added 39 assists, while Jordan Pereira recorded 10 digs.
Long Beach State and McMaster will return to exhibition action on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 4 p.m. (PT).
