MALIBU, Calif. - The second-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team came back from a two-set deficit to top No. 5 Pepperdine, 20-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-22, 15-11, Saturday evening at Firestone Fieldhouse.
LBSU, which won its eighth-straight road match, improves to 21-7 overall and 17-6 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.
Junior Dalton Ammerman led the 49ers with 20 kills on .412 hitting, while adding seven digs and six blocks. Junior Ian Satterfield also had 14 kills and eight digs, while classmate Taylor Crabb totaled 14 kills and six digs. Senior Colten Echave chipped in six kills and six blocks.
Long Beach State finished the match with a 16-to-5 advantage in total team blocks.
Junior Connor Olbright directed the offense to .331 hitting with 53 assists and had 10 digs for his team-leading ninth double-double of the season. Sophomore Ryan Windisch also compiled a career-high 11 digs.
In the opening set, Pepperdine took an early 8-4 lead, but Long Beach State answered with a 6-1 run, capped by a solo block from Taylor Gregory, to go up, 10-9. It then went back-and-forth with four tie scores before a Crabb kill followed by an Ammerman ace gave the 49ers a 15-13 advantage. LBSU stayed out front until the Waves used a 9-2 spurt to prevail 25-20.
It was a seesaw battle in set two with 13 ties before Pepperdine went on top, 16-14. The home team continued on a 6-2 sprint to hold a 20-16 advantage and eventually took set point at 24-19. Long Beach State was able to pull within three with a kill from Crabb and a triple block by Gregory, Ammerman and Olbright, but Beau Vandeweghe was able to put the next ball away to give Pepperdine the 25-21 win.
LBSU took control in the third frame, racing out to an 11-4 lead on a block by Satterfield. The 49ers later used an 8-2 run to go on top, 20-10. The visitors cruised the rest of the way as a double block from Echave and Ammerman gave them the 25-14 victory.
The fourth set was tightly contested as neither team led by more than a pair until Long Beach State scored the final two for the three-point win. After it was knotted up at 20-20, back-to-back kills from Crabb and Ammerman put LBSU ahead for good. Pepperdine was able to close the gap to one before an Echave kill and an ace from Satterfield ended it at 25-22.
The Waves (13-10, 12-10 MPSF) held an early 3-1 edge in the final set, but the 49ers then reeled off nine-straight points to take a comfortable 10-3 lead. Pepperdine made a late push, cutting the deficit to three before a Crabb kill closed it out at 15-11.
Maurice Torres (20 kills, 11 digs) and Josh Taylor (18 kills, 13 digs) paced Pepperdine.
Long Beach State returns to the Walter Pyramid on Saturday, April 13, when it hosts Cal State Northridge in its regular-season finale. The 49ers will honor Alex Anshus, Trevor Crabb and Colten Echave in a Senior Night ceremony prior to first serve at 7 p.m.
