March 9, 2012
LONG BEACH - The eighth-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team opened its Active Ankle Tournament with a 3-0 sweep over IPFW Friday evening at the Walter Pyramid.
Junior Trevor Crabb and freshman John La Rusch both finished with a team-high 10 kills, while hitting .500. Crabb also totaled five digs. Senior Ryan Meehan chipped in seven kills and committed no errors on 11 attempts.
Sophomore Connor Olbright guided the 49er offense to a blistering .473 hitting percentage with 34 assists.
In the first set, Long Beach State (10-8) took an early 7-4 lead following back-to-back kills from Brad Hemmerling. After IPFW closed the gap to one, the 49ers proceeded to go on a 10-5 run, capped by an Olbright ace, to pull ahead, 19-13. LBSU didn't look back from there as it went up by as many as eight en route to the 25-18 victory.
It went back-and-forth in set two before Long Beach State scored four unanswered points to go on top, 14-10. The Mastodons eventually knotted it up at 16-16, but an IPFW service error followed by a Meehan kill gave the 49ers the edge. The visitors then responded with a 4-1 spurt to take a 20-19 lead, but after a quick timeout, LBSU came storming back with four straight points to pull out front, 23-20. Long Beach State was able to hold on as an IPFW service error ended it at 25-23.
The 49ers took control from the start of the third set as they used a 6-1 run, capped by a double block from Meehan and La Rusch, to own a 12-5 advantage. LBSU played a sideout game from there, cruising to the 25-17 win.
Elon Fyfield paced the Mastodons (10-7) with 12 kills and four digs.
Long Beach State closes out the Active Ankle Tournament tomorrow when it takes on No. 7 Lewis at 7 p.m.
