Long Beach State Sweeps Cal Baptist for Sixth-Straight Win
March 8, 2014
LONG BEACH - One day after topping No. 2 BYU, the third-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team cruised to a 25-18, 25-21, 25-16 win over Cal Baptist Saturday evening at the Walter Pyramid.
It was the 49ers' sixth-straight victory and they have dropped just two sets during that stretch.
Senior Taylor Crabb paced LBSU with 14 kills, five digs and two aces. Sophomore Taylor Gregory also had seven kills on .600 hitting (7-1-10), while senior Jeff Ornee recorded four kills and four blocks. Senior Dalton Ammerman chipped in four kills, five digs, three blocks and two aces.
It was a seesaw battle early in the first set before Long Beach State went on a 9-3 run to pull ahead, 14-8. The home team never looked back from there as it led by at least three the rest of the way, and a Lancer service error eventually ended it at 25-18.
In set two, the 49ers went up, 11-7, on a solo block from Ian Satterfield. CBU then answered with a 4-1 spurt to close the gap to one. LBSU would not relinquish its lead, however, as it proceeded to outscore Cal Baptist, 10-6, to go on top, 22-17. The Lancers called a timeout and were able to come within three, but a Connor Olbright kill gave LBSU the 25-21 victory.
The 49ers (13-4, 12-4 MPSF) never trailed in the third frame as they broke open a 10-10 tie with five unanswered points. They would increase their cushion to 22-14 on a Satterfield kill and continued to roll, taking the set and match at 25-16.
Cal Baptist (4-14, 2-13 MPSF) hit .264 on the night and was led by Johannes Brink, who finished with 12 kills and 10 digs.
Long Beach State wraps up its season-long eight-match homestand next weekend when it hosts the annual Active Ankle Classic. The 49ers open the four-team tournament against Ohio State on Friday, March, 14, and will then square off against Penn State on Saturday, March 15.
