Jan. 15, 2013
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Junior Taylor Crabb registered his 13th career double-double to lift the ninth-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team to a 25-23, 25-22, 16-25, 25-17 victory over No. 5 UCLA Tuesday evening at Pauley Pavilion.
LBSU improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
Crabb finished the night with 17 kills on .394 hitting and added a season-high 11 digs for his first double-double of the year. Junior Jeff Ornee chipped in 11 kills and five digs, while junior Dalton Ammerman and senior Colten Echave had nine kills each. Echave committed just one error on 13 swings for a .615 clip. Freshman Andrew Sato totaled a team-best 12 digs.
Junior Connor Olbright directed the 49ers to a .282 hitting percentage with a season-high 45 assists.
The 49ers made a couple of switches in their lineup with Ornee earning the start at opposite and redshirt freshman Taylor Gregory making his collegiate debut at middle blocker.
It was a seesaw battle early in the opening set with six tie scores before Long Beach State took its first lead of the night at 8-7. LBSU stayed out front until the Bruins evened it back up at 11-11. After the two teams traded points, the 49ers used a 3-0 spurt, capped by a Crabb kill, to go on top, 15-12.
Long Beach State wouldn't relinquish the lead and went up, 19-15, on a kill from Echave. UCLA eventually closed the gap to one at 23-22, but another kill by Crabb gave the 49ers set point. The Bruins sided out before Ornee ended it at 25-23 with a kill from the right side.
LBSU never trailed in the second frame as it took an early 9-4 lead following an Olbright ace. It then went back-and-forth until Long Beach State used a 7-2 run to go up by eight at 21-13. UCLA would cut the deficit to five and eventually held off four set points before a ball handling error gave the 49ers the 25-22 victory.
The Bruins (5-3, 1-1 MPSF) used an 8-3 run midway through set three to pull ahead, 13-6. UCLA didn't look back from there, going up by as many as 10 en route to the 25-16 win.
The 49ers regrouped and went on top, 5-2, to start the fourth stanza. After the Bruins closed the gap to one, LBSU pulled back out front by three (9-6) following back-to-back kills by Ammerman. The home team would later score three-straight points to make it 12-11 before Long Beach State went on a 9-3 sprint to hold a comfortable 21-14 edge. The 49ers were never threatened from there as an Ammerman kill ended it at 25-17.
UCLA hit .289 as a team and was led by Robart Page's match-high 21 kills. Gonzalo Quiroga chipped in 14 kills.
Long Beach State continues MPSF action this weekend as it is set to host Hawai'i in its home opener at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18. The two teams will then face each other again in a 7:30 p.m. showdown on Saturday (Jan. 19).
