Joe Fryer Wins 2018 SCGA Match Play Championship

Aug. 8, 2018

MURRIETA, Calif. - Long Beach State senior Joe Fryer claimed the 2018 Southern California Golf Association Match Play Championship on Wednesday at the Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta, Calif., adding another victory to his resume this summer.

Fryer defeated Cody Hall in Wednesday’s final, clinching the victory with a birdie in the 16th hole to secure a 4 & 2 victory. The top seed in the 32-player bracket, Fryer was able to cruise through the first two days of the competition and into the semifinal round. Earlier on Wednesday, he was pushed to the 19th hole before he was able to outlast Hunter Epson and reach the final.

The final matchup sat even through five holes, but Fryer gained some separation by winning the next four holes to go up by four at the turn. Hall bogeyed holes 6-8 before Fryer capped off his 2-under front side with a birdie on the ninth. Hall responded with birdies on the first two holes on the back side to cut the deficit in half, but he would never get closer than two holes back of Fryer the rest of the afternoon.

Fryer continues a productive offseason on the golf course after winning the SCGA Amateur Championship in La Jolla, Calif. and taking the amateur title at the Long Beach Open back in July. Fryer was a 2018 First Team All-Big West selection for Long Beach State and was a two-time Big West Golfer of the Month during his junior campaign.
